Flew non-stop from Newark to Panamá City. Spent a few days touring the city. We hopped aboard our cruise ship and began the journey through the Panamá Canal. We had both read the David McCullough book about the building of the canal which greatly added to our understanding of the construction of the massive project. We actually sailed through the canal at 6AM for a 7 hour passage. The locks and engineering was fascinating.
First stop was Cartagena, Colombia where we hired a guide for our walk through the old town. This was our first visit to South America. Our ship made several day long stops as it sailed towards Miami. Stops included Aruba, Curaçao, St Kitts, Tortola and the Dominican Republic. Interspersed between the island stops were relaxing days at sea. At each stop we either hired a guide or took in a guided tour of the island.
Towards the end of the trip Evelyn tested positive for COVID which confined her to the cabin. When I got home I was also positive.
