Owl's Head

Owl's Head is one of the 48 New Hampshire 4000-footers. It is an extreme 18 mile round-trip hike featuring a long, flat walk on old railroad beds, tricky river crossings, and a grueling, unmarked steep scramble up an avalanche slide. We had been anxious about the hike due to its length. I spend considerable time researching the unmarked Black Pond bushwhack which eliminated 2 river crossings and my brand new GPSr was successful in negotiating that route. As it is located in a wilderness area there is no signage identifying when to exit the trail for the unmarked route to the summit. It took us 14 hours and we struggled coming home on the straight and flat Lincoln Woods trail. Brian had hiked ahead and we found him at our car awaiting our return.
